Pond Lily

White pond lily
Dawn Marsh/USFWS

Notice the white (or yellow perhaps) flowers on the top of the water? Those are pond lilies and here we have white and yellow. The water here is usually quite calm and quiet making it the perfect environment for water lilies due to them being rooted to the ponds bottom. Its stems and leaves have air channels that trap air to keep the plant afloat. The roots of the water lily are rhizomes or fleshy tubers that store nutrients and are a favorite treat of the muskrat.
