Dike

Civilian Conservation Corps Crew in 1935

The roadway that you are currently on is called a dike. These dikes were established in the 1930s by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) while simultaneously creating the pools. The dirt that was dug out of the pools was used to create the embankments and then vegetation was planted on the side of the dike to help stop erosion from occurring. The roads are continually being maintained throughout the course of the season to aid in public access in viewing the wonders of nature.
