Bracken ferns are located throughout the refuge and can be found all along the Wilderness Drive as well as many other types of ferns. Bracken ferns survive all year-round although when the first frost hits or close to it, it does not appear that way. The green leafy part (full grown frond) is only present in the summer so as fall approaches it will start to turn yellow and slowly die back. The dead fronds will then lay on the ground where their thick mat will protect the rhizomes from the frost. Bracken fern are highly adaptable, they love the sun but are also very shade tolerant, they can be found on every continent except Antarctica!
